The older guys used to drive their old cars down there and dumped them there after beating the heck out of them. We used to dig tunnels all throughout clay mountain. Amazing that nobody got buried alive there. The old "huts" that the older guys would build there complete with battery powered electric. LOL, of course us younger kids were not allowed there! Yes, fond memories of that place!

Great to see some of the old gang around here. How fortunate were we to grow up in those parts? Mom sold our house on Lockwood Drive after Dad passed away in 2001 and moved up to Rhinebeck with Bette and her family a few years ago. So strange not to have that homestead any longer. It makes these memories so bittersweet for me.

Thanks Tom and Steve for writing , I am heading towards 50 this June, but can remember my days as a youth at Clay Mountain, either biking, hiking , sledding or ice skating....we did it all. I remember Terence O'Driscoll , Jim Olsen and myself during Cub Scouts call ourselves, 'The 3 Kings of the Moss'! This is when we walked the trails down along Lockwood Drive near the big rock and overlooking the narrow part of Annsville creek.
Best to you Tom and the O'Leary family from the Woods Boys.

Tom,

Well written piece about Clay Mountain!

Yes, it was a special place for children and young and adolescents to be free both in mind and body out in the open space. I can still remember the summer days walking to Devils Island to catch yellow perch and the many sunny's. Clay Mountain was my sanctuary and shaped many of us who lived in Highland Park. In some respects I view that Mountain as an old friend that will never let me down.

Do you remember a board game where the "players" were ice cubes with feet. You moved the cubes from one place to another, dropping them in water or pouring salt on them. The winner was the one who made it all the way to the end without melting.
