This morning, I was researching instructional technology and soon found myself hunting for images of vintage SRA reading cards. Why did I end up there?
What a wonderful flashback!
I have been thinking about the fun I had using the SRA card system back in the Assumption School in Peekskill, New York back in the 1970s. My mother was a reading teacher, so we would often wait in her reading resource room after work until she was done for the day. I used that time to make my way through the color coded cards from the SRA box and was always so excited to move up through the colors to the advanced dark purples, even though I agree with Brave Girl Copy that there is something special about those Aqua colored SRA cards.

McGraw Hill is still publishing the SRA; but in my mind, nothing can compare to the retro look and feel of the SRA of the 1970s.

My friend and I were just talking about SRA cards the other day! I would finish the whole series for my grade level so early in the year that I was allowed more free time in the library than anyone else. That rocked.
Me too! I loved it – the stories, the size of the cards, the feel of the cards — and especially the color of the cards! Phonics rocks! I feel sorry for my daughters, who all learned to read very early on their own by sight reading. Their loss, I suppose
This was the highlight of my week in primary school (30+ years ago)! Loved SRA! (I’m a passionate reader now – maybe there’s a connection?)
